Bird resting place

Hornborgasjön is one of the most famous bird lakes in Sweden . It is located in the Swedish province of Västergötland about 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Skara and is one of the Swedish Ramsar areas .

Cranes at Hornborgasjön

The lake, which is around 30 square kilometers in size, fell victim to land reclamation at the end of the 19th century. Due to several lowering of the water level, its area was reduced to 4 square kilometers, which finally became boggy in the 1960s. After an extensive restoration, during which the water level was raised by almost a meter, the lake became a bird paradise again, which is now a nature reserve and protected by the international Ramsar Convention .

The lake is about two meters deep and is surrounded by a belt of reeds. It serves as a resting place for migratory birds in spring and autumn, but many birds also stay by the lake and breed there. Of the 100 bird species that can be observed at the lake, around half are migratory birds and half breed in or by the lake. Among the migratory birds are the cranes , which stay at the lake and in the surrounding area from mid-March to the end of September and also breed here. Their number can be up to 25,000.

On the eastern shore of the lake (a few kilometers north of the village of Broddetorp ) there is a bird station with a museum and ornithological station ( Naturum Hornborga ). On the south bank (near Bjurum ) there is another bird station ( Naturum Trandansen ), where thousands of cranes can be observed in spring and autumn.
