The white-throated spider hunter ( Arachnothera longirostra ) is a species of bird from the nectar bird family .

description

The white-throated spider hunter reaches a length of 14 centimeters. The upper side is solid olive green, the underside yellow. Throat and chest are grayish white. The long curved beak is black on the top and gray on the underside. The legs are blackish, the iris brown. He has a restless, loud, and direct flight. His voice consists of bleating calls in flight and a repetitive " guess " when looking for food.

distribution and habitat

The white-throated spiderhunter is found in Bangladesh , Bhutan , Brunei , Cambodia , China , India , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , Nepal , the Philippines , Thailand and Vietnam . Its habitat are subtropical and tropical mangrove forests , moist flatland forests and moist mountain forests at an altitude of up to 1700 m.

  • Arachnothera longirostra cinireicollis ( Vieillot , 1819) is common on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra .
  • Arachnothera longirostra zarhina Oberholser , 1912 occurs on the Banyak Islands .
  • Arachnothera longirostra niasensis van Oort , 1910 occurs on Nias .
  • Arachnothera longirostra prillwitzi Hartert, E , 1901 is widespread on Java and Bali .
  • Arachnothera longirostra rothschildi van Oort , 1910 is widespread on the northern Natuna Islands .
  • Arachnothera longirostra atita Oberholser , 1932 occurs on the southern Natuna Islands.
  • Arachnothera longirostra buettikoferi van Oort , 1910 occurs in Borneo .

Previously, Arachnothera longirostra flammifera Tweeddale , 1878, Arachnothera longirostra randi Solomonsen , 1953, Arachnothera longirostra dilutior Sharpe , 1876 were considered further subspecies, but these were split off as separate species or their subspecies.

It feeds on nectar, spiders, grasshoppers and other armored insects.

Reproduction

The breeding season is from March to September. Both partners build a nest from dead leaves that is attached to the underside of a large leaf. The nest is bag-shaped with a side opening. The clutch consists of two to three pink-white eggs with red spots. Both parents take care of raising the young.
