Finn Solomon Islands

Finn Salomonsen (born January 31, 1909 in Copenhagen , † April 23, 1983 ) was a Danish ornithologist . He is best known for his work on the avifauna in Greenland .

Life

Finn Salomonsen took an interest in Greenland at the age of 16 after having the opportunity to visit the sparsely populated Upernavik Archipelago on the east coast of Greenland. He studied zoology, graduated in 1932 and then became an assistant in the management of Danish nature reserves. In 1939 he completed his doctorate. His main research interests were the migration of birds and the moulting birds.

As a member of the Jewish faith, he had to flee to Sweden during the Second World War . In 1943 he became assistant curator at the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen . In 1952 he became a research assistant at the University of Copenhagen , where he taught ornithology from 1960.

Salomonsen is the author or co-author of 19 scientific works. In addition to his research on the avifauna of Greenland and the Arctic, he was a member of a research expedition to the Philippines in 1951/1952 and to the Bismarck Archipelago and New Guinea in 1962 . From 1942 to 1961 he was involved in the publications of the Danish journal Dansk Ornithologisk Forenings Tidsskrift .

Trivia

Finn Salomonsen is the father of the Danish rock singer Sanne Salomonsen , who was born in 1955.

Dedication names

Kenneth Carroll Parkes described a subspecies of the dwarf mistletoe ( Dicaeum pygmaeum salomonseni ) in his honor in 1962 . The subspecies of the tree pipit ( Anthus trivialis salomonseni ) described by Phillip Alexander Clancey is now considered a synonym for the nominate form .
