The Upernavik Archipelago is an archipelago in Avannaata Kommunia , Greenland . The archipelago has the southern end on the northwest coast of the Sigguup Nunaa peninsula (about 71 ° 50'N 56 ° 00'W) and the northern end in the north of Melville Bay (about 74 ° 50'N 57 ° 30'W).
The archipelago is one of the earliest populated areas in Greenland . The first humans reached the islands around 2000 BC. Chr.
Today the area is sparsely populated, with a large number of settlements occurring. The largest settlement is Upernavik . In 2015 the city had 1,140 inhabitants.
