Pieter van Oort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pieter van Oort (born October 10, 1804 in Utrecht , † September 2, 1834 in Padang on Sumatra ) was a Dutch painter and explorer .

Origin and work

Born as the son of the Dutch painter Hendrik van Oort (1775–1847) in Utrecht, he learned drawing and art painting from his father. In 1825 he became a member of the Natural History Commission of the Dutch East Indies (Dutch: Natuurkundige Commissie voor Nederlands-Indië ). A year later, he sailed to Java with the naturalists Heinrich Boie , Heinrich Christian Macklot and Salomon Müller , where he accompanied the members of the commission on their numerous expeditions. Initially, he traveled to the west of the island of Java (1826-1828), later the islands of Ambon , New Guinea , Timor (1828-1829) and finally the west coast of Sumatra (1833-1834), where he died of malaria in the area around Padang . Another source gives the date of death on September 24, 1834 . The cause of death is given as a biliary fever, of which Heinrich Boie also died on September 4, 1827 . Possibly a mix-up, especially since the event was already 30 years ago.

Merits

On July 22, 1831, he boarded with Macklot and the botanist Pieter Willem Korthals the 2,211-meter high volcano Gunung Salak in West Java. Korthals named the mistletoe Loranthus oortianus (Korthals, 1839) in his honor .
