description

The Tangkuban Perahu is located about 20 kilometers from the fourth largest Indonesian city of Bandung and is visually omnipresent there. Although it was inactive for a long time, there is still a certain awe of the people of Bandung.

From Lembang, the volcano is surrounded in the lower regions by undeveloped jungle , promoted by the fertile volcanic ash. In addition to the inactive main crater, there are numerous secondary craters, which typically occur as hot springs . Smaller outbreaks with ash rain occur occasionally, most recently in July 2019. The smell of sulfur dioxide is omnipresent on the main crater as well as on the numerous secondary craters. On March 4, 2013, it broke out again after almost 30 years of silence. He hurled ashes and rocks 500 meters high. The second highest warning level was declared.

In terms of tourism, the volcano is a sight that is characterized by the contrast between the fertile surroundings and the vegetation-free Vuklang stones at the summit. A road leads to the upper rim of the crater. Guides are available for tourists who offer excursions mainly to the hot springs. The springs are located about a hundred meters below the main crater and can be reached on foot via well-secured paths.

myth

Eruption of the Tangku Railway Perahu (1910)

The legend of the origin of the Tangkuban Perahu includes the mythological idea of the boat (Indonesian perahu ), which is important for the Sundanese , which is expressed, among other things, in the myth of the soul ship, with which the souls of the deceased embark on the journey to the afterlife, and the incest - Motif of the Oedipus fabric. The hero Sang Kuriang emerged from the connection between the woman Dayang Sumbi and the dog Si Tumang. One day, the youthful Sang Kuriang went hunting with the dog. When the dog disobeyed, Sang Kuriang became angry and killed him without realizing that the dog was his father. The mother was just as upset about this, she hit the boy on the head and drove him away from home. Many years later, Sang Kuriang met his mother again, not knowing who she was, fell in love with her, and demanded to marry her. Dayang Sumbi recognized her son by the scar on his head. She set him a seemingly impossible task to avert the wedding. May he build a large dam for a lake and a ship that floats on the lake in one night. When Sang Kuriang, endowed with magical powers, was about to complete his work, Dayang Sumbi used a trick to fake dawn that night. She opened a white cloth in the east and made a cock crow. Lost the reward for his efforts, Sang Kuriang reacted angrily and overturned the boat, which has since turned into a wide ridge. The story is related to the boat shape of the zither Kacapi and is sung about in numerous songs.
