Heinrich Christian Macklot (born October 20, 1799 in Frankfurt am Main ; † May 12, 1832 in Purwakarta on Java ) was a German naturalist and zoologist .

Live and act

Macklot completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist from 1815 , studied natural history, pharmacy and medicine in Heidelberg from 1818 to 1822 and received his doctorate in 1822.

On February 26, 1822, through a recommendation from his friend Heinrich Boie , he was appointed curator of the osteological collection of the Natural History Museum in Leiden . On December 5, 1823 he was appointed by Coenraad Jacob Temminck together with Heinrich Boie and Salomon Müller to a research group ("Natuurkundige Cornmissie") of the Dutch East India Company, to which the draftsman Pieter van Oort also belonged. The departure for East India (now Indonesia ) was delayed until 1825. In June 1826 the group reached Java. Between 1828 and 1830 Macklot visited the islands of New Guinea and Timor on board the ship Triton , where he collected zoological and ethnological objects. In May 1831 he undertook a research expedition along the Javanese coasts. In 1832 he was stabbed with a lance during a bloody uprising by Chinese workers in Purwakarta in the Krawang district (Java). A few days earlier, all his scientific records and equipment had been destroyed in a fire set by the insurgents. However, Macklot's scientific collections were preserved and are now in the Museum Naturalis in Leiden.
