Ernst Spieß (born January 16, 1927 in Innsbruck , Tyrol ; † December 12, 2011 in Mayrhofen ) was an Austrian ski racer , trainer and official .

He was a member of the Austrian national ski team from 1947 to 1952. He was coach of the Austrian women's national ski team and in the winter season 1956 coach of the Spanish national and Olympic team. At both Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, 1964 and 1976, he was the race director of the men's downhill race.

Life

As a young racer, Ernst Spieß also worked as a trainer for his club, Turnerschaft Innsbruck. He was instrumental in the success of his future wife Erika Mahringer , and his children Uli and Nicola Spieß also benefited from his training methods as racers. In the mid-1970s he was the women's racing director for the Austrian ski team. Because of his specialist knowledge and organizational talent, he was a very popular racing director at numerous international events. The high point of his career as a racing manager were the two men's downhill runs at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 and 1976.

Ernst Spieß set up one of Austria's largest ski schools in Mayrhofen together with his wife . Together they founded the world's first ski kindergarten. Ernst Spieß was Vice President of the Austrian Professional Ski Instructor Association and chairman of the Tyrolean Ski Instructor Association for 18 years. He campaigned for quality improvement in Austrian ski teaching.

Ernst Spieß and his wife were the main initiators for founding the boarding school for skiers in Stams.
