John David Digues La Touche (born June 5, 1861 in Tours ; † May 6, 1935 at sea when returning to Ireland from Mallorca ) was a French - Irish ornithologist and tax officer.

His father Charles Jean Digues La Touche (1811-1884) was born in Dublin and his mother Marie Appoline nee. de Trouchier of French origin. They married on June 13, 1860 in Tours. The father converted to Catholicism and moved to Tours in 1844. In John David Digue's La Touche birth entry in Tours, his name is Jean David La Touche . John David Digues La Touche married Caroline Amanda born in 1896. Focken (? -1945) in Shantou , to which he dedicated Brachypteryx leucophris carolinae in 1898 . She had eight children. A daughter, Jeanne La Touche (1907-1921), after which he 1921 joannae Zosterops palpebrosus , a synonym for progress Brillenvogel subtype Zosterops palpebrosus siamensis Blyth , 1867, and 1922 Heteroxenicus joannae , a synonym for the blackthroat ( Calliope obscura ( Berezowksi & Bianchi , 1891)), died of measles at the age of 14 . In 1921 he dedicated the red-tailed siva subspecies ( Minla ignotincta mariae ) to his daughter Mary (1907–1973) , his youngest daughter Elizabeth (1912–1988) he dedicated the black- browed broad-throat subspecies ( Serilophus lunatus elisabethae ) in 1921 and the gray-throated parrot in 1921 ( Suthora alphonsiana elisabethae ). There were also the children Charlotte (1899–1906), John (1909–1984), Robert (1902–1939), David (1904–1990), Charles (1904–1990).

John David Digues La Touche was educated at Downside Abbey , and at the age of twenty-one he was serving for the Imperial Maritime Customs Service, which was then the most important tax authority in the Chinese state. For this he worked until his retirement in June 1921. In retirement he moved to Ireland, where he bought a residence in the townland of Kiltimon in County Wicklow . In the winter of 1934 he traveled to Mallorca and died on his return journey at sea.

La Touche was interested in natural history in general , but was particularly passionate about ornithology. During his time in China he was passionate about bird watching and collecting. His first publication in 1887 was on Fuzhou birds . In 1892 a lengthy treatise on the bird world in the neighborhood of Fuzhou and Shantou followed . Together with Charles Boughey Rickett, he published in 1905 on the birds breeding in Fujian Province . A year later there was a report on the birds of Zhenjiang on the lower Yangtze River . With William Robert Ogilvie-Grant he collaborated in 1907 on a publication on the avifauna on Formosa . During the next few years of the war, his writing activities were limited to a few short articles on Chinese birds. It was not until 1920 that another lengthy treatise on the bird world in the northeast of the Zhili Province followed, followed in 1922 on the birds from the Hubei Province . In 1923 he began a lengthy treatise on the birds in southeast Yunnan Province . His greatest work was certainly the two volumes of the Handbook of the Birds of Eastern China .

It was La Touche who rediscovered the blue bunting ( Junco siemsseni Martens, GH , 1906) in 1913 and provided a female for illustration for the first time. His contributions to the migration of birds on Shaweishan Island in 1911 and Qinhuangdao in 1914 provided the first reliable data from these stations on the subject. His valuable Chinese bird collection went to the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology after the completion of his Handbook of the Birds of Eastern China .

Memberships

In 1921 he was elected a corresponding fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU). Since 1892 he was an elected member of the British Ornithologists' Union and since 1898 a corresponding member of the Zoological Society of London .
