The X 4750 series of the French state railway SNCF is a series of two-part diesel railcars that were in service with the SNCF from 1977 to 2016. With the vehicles of the series X 4300 , X 4500 , X 4630 and X 4900 , it belonged to the family of the so-called Caravelles - due to the engine noise reminiscent of the aircraft of the Sud Aviation Caravelle type - which are all at the Ateliers de Construction du Nord de la France (ANF) were built. With the X 4750, the last two-part Caravelles came into the SNCF's portfolio, the successor series X 4900 was three-part.

History and description

Original version

Control car XR 8782 (front) and railcar X 4782 in Saint-Valery-en-Caux , 1992

The X 4750 series was largely identical to the previous X 4630 series. The most important difference to that was the more powerful engine.

40 vehicles of this series were put into service between April 1977 and June 1978, they were given the road numbers 4750 to 4789. Each four-axle railcar with only one driver's cab was permanently coupled to a control car of the same type (series XR 8700), and a rubber bead connection connected the two car bodies . In contrast to its predecessors, the company numbers of the control cars corresponded to those of the railcars: X 4751 was coupled with XR 8751, X 4752 with XR 8752, etc. The 39.5 t railcar had 60 seats in 2nd  class (seating 3 + 2) and a luggage compartment; like the control car, it was 21,240 mm long with buffers . The control car weighed 25.0 t. It was two-class and had 24 1st class seats and 49 2nd class seats.

The Saurer six-cylinder diesel engine S1 DHR of the railcar had an output of 412  kW . As a boxer engine , it could be installed under the floor of the railcar. The top speed of the vehicle was 140 km / h.

Unlike most French locomotives, the "Caravelles" received a triple headlights . The railcars and control cars were originally painted red with a cream-colored ribbon of windows. With the other “Caravelle” series, the X 4750 could run in multiple units of a maximum of three units.

Paris – Granville railcar

In 1981 a series of seven vehicles (X 4790 to X 4797) was added. In 1987, these double railcars were given the modified fronts, reinforced for better protection of the driver , as they were later given to numerous older Caravelles after renovations. They only had two-leaf outer doors and, for use on the Paris - Granville route, also had 2 + 2 seating in 2nd class (47 individual seats in the multiple unit and 36 in the control car). In contrast to the original version, these railcars weighed 40.6 t and were 21,740 mm long over buffers; their control cars, which were just as long, weighed 25.4 t.

Mail railcar

Another sub-series represented eight units that were built in 1979 for the French post office . The railcars known as Rames automotrices postales (RAP) were given the company numbers XP 94 750 to XP 94 757 and a different paint scheme. They could transport a maximum of 66 containers of 200 kg each and were used on routes from Paris to the west and north. In 1994, seven of them were acquired by the SNCF, adapted to the production vehicles by 1996 and used under the numbers X 4797 to X 4803. The railcar XP 94755 remained with its control car XRP 98755 at the post office and is preserved in a museum.

modification

Numerous railcars of the original design were modernized from the mid-1980s, with the conversions of the Paris-Granville railcars serving as models. They also received a modified front design and 2 + 2 seating in the 2nd carriage class. Each region was able to determine the paintwork of the vehicles running there.

Whereabouts

All vehicles in the series were taken out of service by 2015. Several copies, including the X 4781 railcar, went to Regiotrans in Romania ; four continue to exist with French museum railways .
