Lorenzo Guerini (2020)

Lorenzo Guerini (born November 21, 1966 in Lodi ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico . He has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2013 and has been Italy's Defense Minister in the Conte II cabinet since September 2019 .

Life

Guerini graduated in Political Science from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan . After completing his military service , he worked in the insurance industry. In the 1990s he was also active for the Democrazia Cristiana and then for the successor party Partito Popolare Italiano in local politics, initially as a city councilor and also as a magistrate in his hometown of Lodi in Lombardy. In 1995, at the age of 28, he was elected President of Lodi Province ; he was then the youngest of all Italian provincial presidents . In 2005 and 2010, Guerini was elected mayor of Lodi in the first ballot with an absolute majority of the votes cast.

Member of the Partito Democratico since 2007 due to party mergers, he gave up his mayor's office in Lodi at the end of 2012 to run for the Italian parliamentary elections the following February 2013 . At the end of 2013 he became a member of the national board of the Democratic Party in Rome, in which he successively held the functions of speaker, deputy party chairman and board coordinator. In the legislative period until 2018, Guerini was a member of the Defense Committee and the Parliamentary Committee for the Control of the Intelligence Services in Italy . In the parliamentary elections in 2018 , Guerini was able to defend his parliamentary mandate despite significant losses to the Democratic Party. He chaired the parliamentary committee for the control of the intelligence services, he was also a member of the committee for foreign affairs. In the course of the formation of the Conte II cabinet, which is also supported by the Democratic Party, Guerini took over the office of Defense Minister on September 5, 2019.
