Valerio Zanone (born January 22, 1936 in Turin , † January 7, 2016 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Partito Liberale Italiano (PLI), who was a member of both the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ) and the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica ) was. He was also Italy's Minister of Environment and Defense and, between 1990 and 1991, Mayor of Turin.

Life

After attending school, Zanone studied philosophy at the University of Turin , where he was one of Luigi Pareyson's students . After completing his studies, he worked as a journalist .

He began his political career in 1970 when, as a candidate for the Partito Liberale Italiano (PLI), he was elected a member of the regional council (consiglio regional) of Piedmont and was a member of it until 1976.

In 1976 he was to succeed Agostino Bignardi General of the PLI and held this position until his replacement by Alfredo Biondi 1985. In the elections of 20 June 1976 Zanone in was constituency Turin for the first time as a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Camera the deputati) chosen and belonged this initially from the seventh to the 8th November 1990 in the tenth legislative period .

On July 31, 1985, Zanone was appointed by Prime Minister Bettino Craxi as a minister without portfolio (Ministro senza Portafiglio) in his first cabinet , where he assumed the duties of environment minister from August 2, 1985 to August 1, 1986 (Ministro senza Portafiglio con delega per l'Ecologia) true. Zanone was appointed Minister of Defense (Ministro della Difesa) in his cabinet by Prime Minister Giovanni Goria on July 28, 1987 and also held this ministerial office in the subsequent government of Ciriaco De Mita until July 22, 1989. He later served during the tenth legislative period from October 18, 1989 until he resigned as Chairman of the Defense Committee on November 8, 1990.

Mayor of Turin, President of the PLI and Senator

On November 8, 1990, he resigned his parliamentary mandate due to incompatibility after he had already become mayor of Turin on July 30, 1990 as the successor to Maria Magnani Noya . In 1990 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique . He held the office of mayor until December 31, 1991 and was then replaced by Giovanna Cattaneo Incisa .

As successor to Salvatore Valitutti , he became president of the Partito Liberale Italiano (PLI) in 1991 and held this position until he was replaced by Alfredo Biondi in 1993. In the elections of April 5, 1992 , Zanone was re-elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies in the Turin constituency and belonged to it until the end of the eleventh electoral term on April 14, 1994. In June 1993 he left the PLI, which was in the process of collapse in the face of the Tangentopoli corruption scandal , and founded the small party Unione Liberaldemocratica (ULD). This entered the parliamentary elections in 1994 as part of the central alliance Patto per l'Italia . In February 1995 the ULD merged with the Federazione dei Liberali (FdL), of which he then became chairman and remained until 2004. The FdL belonged to the center-left alliance L'Ulivo under the leadership of Romano Prodi .

In the elections of April 9, 2006 , Zanone was elected to the Senate (Senato della Repubblica) via the L'Ulivo list and was a member of this as a representative of the Lombardy region until April 28, 2008. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as Vice-Chairman of the Defense Committee between June 7, 2006 and April 28, 2008. He switched to the Partito Democratico (PD) founded on October 14, 2007 in the current 15th legislative period .

In 2010 he finally moved to Alleanza per l'Italia (ApI), founded on November 11, 2009 by the former mayor of Rome and former minister of culture, Francesco Rutelli .
