Cesare Merzagora (born November 9, 1898 in Milan , † May 1, 1991 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Democrazia Cristiana .

Cesare Merzagora was a banker by profession. From 1947 to 1949 he was Minister for Foreign Trade under Alcide De Gasperi . From 1950 to 1952 he was President of the Banca Popolare di Milano . From June 25, 1953 to November 7, 1967 he was President of the Italian Senate. In 1963 he was appointed Senator for Life by President Antonio Segni . In 1964 Merzagora was temporarily acting President. After protests by the Italian communists in 1967, who were outraged by his declarations about the collapse of the political system, he was forced to resign as a senator.

From 1968 to 1979 Merzagora was chairman of the Assicurazioni Generali , and was also for some time chairman of the Banca Popolare di Milano and the Montedison .
