Vittorino Colombo

Vittorino Colombo (born April 3, 1925 in Albiate , province of Milan , † June 1, 1996 in Milan ) was an Italian politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC).

Life

MP and Minister

Colombo studied economics and commercial management after attending school and graduated with a laureate . He began his political career as a candidate for the DC in June 1958 with the election of a member of the Camera dei deputati (Chamber of Deputies) and represented the constituency of Milan until July 4, 1976 .

In the third government of Prime Minister Aldo Moro , he was Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Finance between February 1966 and June 1968.

On December 12, 1968 he was appointed by Prime Minister Mariano Rumor as Minister for Foreign Trade in his first government, before he was Minister for the Merchant Navy in his second cabinet after a government reshuffle between August 5, 1969 and March 27, 1970. He later served as Minister of Health in the fifth Rumor cabinet from March 14 to November 23, 1974 .

Senator and Senate President

On June 20, 1976, he was elected a member of the Senato della Repubblica (Senate) for the DC and remained a member until April 14, 1994.

Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti appointed him Minister of Post and Telecommunications in his third cabinet on July 29, 1976, then Minister of Transport in his fourth government between March 11, 1978 and March 19, 1979, and then again Minister of Post and Telecommunications in his fifth Cabinet, of which he was a member until August 3, 1979. He then held this office in the first government of Francesco Cossiga from August 4, 1979 to April 3, 1980.

On January 20, 1983 he was first Vice President of the Senate, before he was Senate President from May 12 to July 11, 1983 after the sudden death of Tommaso Morlino .

Vittorino Colombo Foundation

After his death, the Vittorino Colombo Foundation ( Fondazione Vittorino Colombo ) was set up to operate a cultural and scientific center in Milan . The foundation also awarded the International Vittorino Colombo Prize.

This was given to Agostino Casaroli (1997), Boutros Boutros-Ghali (1998), Jerzy Buzek (1999), Mikuláš Dzurinda (2000), Roger Etchegaray (2001), Patricio Aylwin (2002), Emilio Colombo (2003), Angelo Sodano (2004), Václav Havel (2005) and Ivo Sanader (2006).
