Marcello Pera (born January 28, 1943 in Lucca , Province of Lucca ) is an Italian philosopher of science , university professor and politician of Forza Italia .

Life

After studying philosophy , Pera first became a university lecturer and then in 1972 a full professor of theoretical philosophy and philosophy of science at the University of Catania and later at the University of Pisa , where he taught until 1994.

One of his specialties was galvanism and the controversy between Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta . In addition, he dealt with philosophers such as Karl Popper , David Hume and Immanuel Kant , but also with questions about Christianity , Islam , relativism , liberalism and ethics in Europe .

On April 21, 1996, he was elected a member of the Senato della Repubblica (Senate) for Forza Italia, of which he was Vice-President between 1996 and 2001, and has represented the interests of Tuscany there ever since . Between January 1998 and May 2001 he was vice chairman of the Forza Italia faction in the Senate.

On May 30, 2001 he became President of the Senate and held this position for approximately five years until April 27, 2006. Between March 2007 and April 2008 he was again Vice President of the Forza Italia parliamentary group in the Senate and has been a member of the Forza Italia group since 2009 Popolo della Libertà (PdL).

Pera has received several awards for his services and was honored not only with the Grand Cross Pro Merito Melitensi , but also with the Grand Cross of the Order of Pius .
