Sandro Bondi (born May 14, 1959 in Fivizzano , Province of Massa-Carrara ) is an Italian politician of the Popolo della Libertà . In Silvio Berlusconi 's fourth cabinet he was Italian Minister of Culture from May 2008 to March 2011.

Political career

Bondi first grew up in Lausanne , where his family had emigrated. After his return to Italy he joined the communist youth organization ( Federazione Giovanile Comunista Italiana ), of which he was chairman in his native Lunigiana (Province of Massa-Carrara and Province of La Spezia ). He completed his philosophy studies at the University of Pisa with a thesis on the Augustinian preacher Leonardo Valazzana .

As a left-wing Catholic, he was involved in the Communist Party of Italy (PCI) and was elected Mayor of Fivizzano on their list in 1989. In 1992, however, he was replaced in this office by a coalition of socialists and Christian democrats . Soon after, he left the PCI.

He met Silvio Berlusconi through the sculptor Pietro Cascella and became his close advisor and secretary. During the 2001 election campaign, he was responsible for putting together a richly illustrated Berlusconi biography ( Una storia italiana ), which was given away to all Italian households. Because of his extraordinary closeness and loyalty to the party leader of Forza Italia, he belongs to the group of the so-called Berluscones .

In the 2001 parliamentary elections , Bondi was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Forza Italia in the Lombardy 1 constituency. After his media work for Forza Italia in the regional elections in 2005, he was appointed coordinator of his party at national level. In 2006 he was re-elected MP in the parliamentary elections in the Campania 2 constituency. While his election to the Italian Senate in the early elections in 2008 was successful, he was defeated by his opponent from the Partito Democratico in the contemporaneous election for the office of provincial president of Massa-Carrara .

After his appointment as Italian Minister of Culture in Berlusconi's new cabinet on May 8, 2008, he handed over the position of national coordinator of Forza Italia to Denis Verdini . At the founding congress of the PdL, Bondi, together with Verdini and La Russa , was reappointed to this office on March 29, 2009.

Due to the increasing deterioration of the excavation site in Pompeii , the opposition demanded Bondi's resignation with a motion of no confidence in November 2010, but this was rejected by a narrow majority on January 26th. Nevertheless, on March 3, 2011, Bondi offered Prime Minister Berlusconi his resignation, which he accepted on March 23.
