Alexander "Alex" Nyarko (born October 15, 1973 in Accra ) is a former Ghanaian / Swiss football player and bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . The midfielder was active in the German-speaking area for FC Basel , Karlsruher SC and Yverdon-Sport FC .

Club career

In his youth Nyarko played in Ghana for the clubs FC Deawa Youngsters and Asante Kotoko before he went to Europe and there first to Sportul Studențesc Bucharest . In 1995 he moved to the Swiss national league A club FC Basel, from where two years later he moved a few kilometers north - to the German Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC.

After the relegation of Karlsruhe to the 2nd Bundesliga , Nyarko moved to French champions RC Lens in 1998 . For the equivalent of 6.3 million euros , this Nyarko sold in 2000 to the English first division club Everton , in whose service he was officially until 2005. However, a very unsteady time began for Nyarko ... after some difficulties (see section fan scandal 2001) the British tried to hand him over to other clubs, which is why he spent one season at AS Monaco in 2001 and then for another season at Paris Saint-Germain was awarded.

In 2005 Nyarko finally left the English and went to Norway to start Kristiansand . After a year and a half, during which Nyarko was hardly ever used due to a protracted injury, among other things, he finally moved back to Switzerland. After long speculation about an involvement with FC Lausanne-Sport , he finally signed a contract with Yverdon-Sport FC until 2008. There Nyarko also ended his active career.

International matches

Nyarko made 44 appearances for his country Ghana . These included two participations in the African Cup of Nations, 1998 in Burkina Faso and 2000 in Ghana . In 1992 he was part of the Ghanaian team, which finished third at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

The 2001 fan scandal

While at Everton, Nyarko hit the headlines when he was attacked on the field by a fan trying to remove his shirt during a game against Arsenal on April 21, 2001 . The London player Tony Adams was able to push the attacker back, but Nyarko was so exasperated, also due to persistent criticism of his performance, that he let himself be replaced and in the excitement declared his retirement from professional football. After the game he disappeared for days, and according to himself, not even his wife knew his whereabouts. Although FC Everton Nyarko initially did not want to blame Nyarko for his behavior, it was announced two weeks later that Nyarko had since emerged again that he would get clearance to move to another club. Initially, however, there was no other club that wanted to sign Nyarko, so it was loaned to France.

particularities

  • In February 2003, after playing for four different clubs in just three years, Nyarko declared that he was "not satisfied with his footballing situation" and "tired of the permanent club change".
  • After moving to Karlsruher SC, Nyarko had such difficulties finding a suitable apartment that the stadium announcer in Karlsruhe asked the fans for help.
