Catalina Sandino Moreno
Catalina Sandino Moreno (born April 19, 1981 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian actress . She became known for her Oscar-nominated role of María Álvarez in Maria Full of Grace (2004).
biography
Catalina Sandino Moreno discovered her talent for the theater at an early age. In 1997, while she was still in high school, the daughter of a pathologist joined the Ruben Di Pietro Theater Academy in Bogotá . During the next four years she appeared here in the plays Acuerdo para Cambiar de Casa by Griselda Gambaro , Tennessee Williams ' The Dark Room and Christopher Durand's Laughing Wild, among others. In addition to the theater, Moreno studied advertising in Bogota after graduating from school.
In 2003 , the 1.69-meter-tall actress had her breakthrough when she got the lead role in Joshua Marston's film Maria Full of Grace (2004). In the Spanish-language drama, which was also nominated for the Golden Globe as best foreign film, Sandino Moreno plays 17-year-old María Álvarez , who, together with two friends, agrees to smuggle cocaine from Colombia to the USA. For her first and so far only role, Moreno was awarded the Silver Bear at the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival, together with the later Oscar winner Charlize Theron . A year later she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress as the first Colombian woman . It has also received the Satellite Award and the Independent Spirit Award , among others .
After this great success, Sandino Moreno moved to New York and took acting classes at the renowned Lee Strasberg Theater Institute , where celebrated mimes such as Marlon Brando , Robert De Niro and Al Pacino studied. She made her New York stage debut in William Shakespeare's play King John , a production of the Frog & Peach Theater Company .
In 2006 she played her next film role as Angie in the thriller On the Edge of Night with Brendan Fraser . In the same year she was in the episode film Paris, je t'aime as Ana and received a supporting role in Richard Linklater's drama Fast Food Nation , which was represented in the competition at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival . In 2007 she took on the role of Hildebranda in the novel adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez ' Love in the Times of Cholera , directed by Mike Newell . In 2008 she starred alongside Benicio del Toro in the two-part biopic Che - Revolución and Che - Guerrilla , directed by Steven Soderbergh in the role of Aleida March . In 2010 she played a supporting role as the vampire Maria in the literary film Eclipse - Bite zum Abendrot .
On April 15, 2006, she married the electrician David Elwell, with whom she had been in a relationship since 2004. The couple met while filming Mary Of Grace , which Elwell was working on.
