Berlin International Film Festival 2004
The 54th Berlin International Film Festival took place from February 5th to 15th, 2004.
Competition section
The festival was the film Cold Mountain by Anthony Minghella opened. The film ran within the competition program, but outside of the competition. In the official competition for the Golden Bear and the Silver Bears put themselves in this year the following films to the judgment of the international jury:
International jury
The jury was led in 2004 by the American actress Frances McDormand as president. Other jury members were: Maji-da Abdi (director from Ethiopia ), Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (actress from Italy ), Samira Makhmalbaf (director from Iran ), Peter Rommel (German film producer), Gabriele Salvatores (director from Italy), Don Talbot ( American film producer and distributor)
Award winners
Golden Bear : Against the Wall by Fatih Akin
Silver bear in the following categories:
- Best director: Kim Ki-duk
- Best Actress: Catalina Sandino Moreno in Graceful Mary and Charlize Theron in Monster
- Best actor: Daniel Hendler in El abrazo partido
- Best score: Banda Osiris for the film First Love
- For an outstanding artistic achievement to the team from dawn under the direction of Björn Runge.
Other prices:
- The AGICOA Blue Angel award for the best European film went to the director of the film Dawn, Björn Runge.
- Alfred Bauer Prize : The Alfred Bauer Prize went to the director of the best debut film Maria full of grace, Joshua Marston.
Panorama section
The following outstanding films were shown in the program of the Panorama 2004 section:
- What is the use of love in thought - director: Achim von Borries - with Daniel Brühl and August Diehl in the leading roles
- I love my work (bullying) - Director: Francesca Comencini - awarded the Ecumenical Jury Prize
- The Other Side of the Moon - Director: Robert Lepage
- Wild Side - Director: Sébastien Lifshitz - awarded the " Teddy Award "
- Die Spielwütigen - Director: Andres Veiel - awarded the Panorama Audience Award
- In the house opposite - director: Marcos Bernstein with Fernanda Montenegro in the lead role - awarded the prize of the International Association of Art Cinemas
- Stratosphere Girl - Director: Matthias X. Oberg
Honorary Golden Bear
The Argentine director Pino Solanas received the Honorary Golden Bear for his life's work .
Children's film festival
The following films were awarded at the Children's Film Festival:
- Glass Bear - awarded by the children's jury, cast with eleven children aged 11 to 14 from Berlin: Magnifico - Director: Maryo J. de los Reyes , Gewitternacht - Director: Michèle Lemieux, Canada
- Special Mention: Die duds - Director: Bernd Sahling (with Dominique Horwitz )
Perspective German cinema
13 German films were shown in this section. The film Flammend 'Herz was awarded the Dialogue en perspective prize in this category by an independent Franco-German jury .
Retrospective
This year's retrospective was dedicated to the directors of " New Hollywood ". Under the title New Hollywood 1967-1976. Trouble in Wonderland , the following films were shown:

- American graffiti by George Lucas
- Badlands by Terrence Malick
- The dialogue by Francis Ford Coppola
- The wild angels by Roger Corman
- Easy Rider by Dennis Hopper
- Five Easy Pieces by Bob Rafelson
- Witch cauldron by Martin Scorsese
- Klute by Alan J. Pakula
- The last command from Hal Ashby
- The last performance of Peter Bogdanovich
- Sugarland Express by Steven Spielberg
- Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese
