Matthias X. Oberg (born September 13, 1969 in Hamburg ) as Matthias Xanthippe Oberg is a German director and screenwriter .

biography

After graduating from high school, MX Oberg worked as a sleeper car attendant at Wagon Lits. With this he financed his short film "Dreaming is a Private Thing", which is based on the short story of the same name by Isaac Asimov . MX Oberg processed his experiences as a sleeper coach into a script and filmed it in 1994 in the Lithuanian studios in Vilnius and in Italy . This is how his first film, Under the Milky Way , with Fabian Busch and Sophie Rois in the leading roles was made. The film premiered at the Max Ophüls Festival , where it won the Saarland Prime Minister's Prize and then screened at the Toronto International Film Festival . In 1997 Oberg received the sponsorship award from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists .

MX Oberg shot his second feature film Undertaker's Paradise in Wales in 1999 with Ben Gazzara in the leading role. The black comedy about a German undertaker, portrayed by Thomas Schmauser , who befriends an American jazz musician, was released in cinemas by Buena Vista under the title Ein Todicheres shop and had its world premiere at the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián .

With Stratosphere Girl , MX Oberg made his third feature film as a German-Swiss co-production. The story of a blonde hostess who uncovered a crime in the nightlife of Tokyo premiered at the 2004 Berlinale in the Panorama section. The music for this mystery thriller was written by the Norwegian jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær .

In his first documentary, Ein Ton Blau , MXOberg deals with the creation and perception of art. This field research, filmed from 2008 to 2010, deals with museum directors like Eugen Blume , collectors like Harald Fackenberg, artists like Joseph Beuys , Yves Klein and Jonathan Meese and was premiered in 2011 at the Documentary Film Festival in Kassel.

In 2015, MX Oberg shot the thriller Zazy in Italy and MMC Studios, starring Ruby O. Fee and Paul Boche   . The music for the film, which premiered on October 1, 2016 at the Hamburg Film Festival , was composed by Simon Rummel .
