The so-called “ Steglitz school tragedy ” occurred in 1927. Günther Scheller and Paul Krantz had founded a “suicide club” and imposed on themselves to part with their lives when they no longer felt love. Günther Scheller had therefore killed his lover Hans Stephan on June 28, 1927 and then himself. The spectacular process also met with interest in other European countries, in the USA and in Japan. During the trial, Günther's sister Hilde Scheller and Paul Krantz were portrayed as examples of a morally shattered youth who were excessively sexually active at an early age. Paul Krantz was charged with murder and incitement to murder, but was ultimately acquitted on all relevant points.

The tragic material was filmed for the first time as early as 1929: Carl Boese's film Geschminkte Jugend was only approved by the Berlin Film Inspectorate after careful consideration. A second film adaptation by Max Nosseck followed in 1959 under the same title, but was withdrawn by the producer because of an objection by the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry .

Berlin 1927, a hot weekend in summer. Paul Krantz, the young poet from a working-class family, and Günther Scheller, the wild and yearning son of an upper middle class family, both high school students, spend a lavish party in the Scheller's summer house, where not only absinthe and poetry and Desire is spoken of, but also the feelings of the protagonists get mixed up, get lost and finally boil over.

Paul loves Günther's sexually revealing sister Hilde, who seems to respond to Paul's feelings as well as having a relationship with the cook Hans. This, however, is actually with Hilde's brother Günther, who knows about the relationship between his friend and his sister Hilde. In addition, Hilde's friend Elli is in love with Paul, who only sees her as a poor substitute for Hilde.

Paul and Günther especially associate thoughts about dying and love and about that "highest point in life". For her, love is "the only reason for which we are ready to die". Inspired by this, they found a “suicide club”, in whose manifest the two friends state together that “to end our lives at the moment when we no longer feel love. And we will take all those with us to death who have robbed us of our love. ”And so Günther shoots Hans after he discovered him in bed with Hilde, and then himself. Paul, however, who was supposed to follow, is arrested .
