action

The Khan family are from Pakistan but have lived in Great Britain for 40 years. Tariq and Sadia have three children: The eldest daughter, Rukhsana, has studied and may soon marry Amar, who has a doctorate. The only son Casim is also a qualified accountant, but earns his living as a DJ and hopes to open his own disco with his friend Hammid. His parents have planned for him to marry his cousin Jasmine, which should take place in a few weeks. According to her will, Casim will continue to live with the family afterwards, so his father plans to expand his house with an extension with rooms for the future family. The youngest daughter Tahara, on the other hand, still goes to school, but dreams of studying journalism. While Rukhsana lives strictly according to the Muslim faith and is also ready to enter into the marriage with Amar planned by their parents, Casim and Tahara slowly try to break away from their parents.

One day, when Tahara is harassed by classmates, she furiously pursues them throughout the school. Casim rushes after her, and in the end everyone ends up in Roisin Hanlon's music room, who is currently giving singing lessons. A guitar breaks in the chaos. The next day, Casim Roisin, whom he noticed immediately, brings a new guitar and drives Roisin home, hiding in the car from people who might know Casim. He and friends later organize a piano transport for them and finally invite them to go out with him. She agrees. In the disco, Casim sees his little sister and is upset. What he is allowed to do is forbidden to her: he sends her home. Casim and Roisin end up in their apartment and spend the night together.

Roisin, who has previously worked part-time as a music teacher, is offered a full-time position at her Catholic school. She could take them up after the summer vacation and only has to present a clearance certificate from her parish priest. Roisin goes into the summer vacation in high spirits and spontaneously books a stay of several days in Spain, to which she takes Casim with her. He tells the family that he has to go to London for work. The days in Spain are harmonious and full of love, but after a while Casim Roisin confesses that his parents want him to marry his cousin. Roisin is injured because she thinks he only saw her as an adventure. Casim questions his feelings about Roisin and decides to dissolve the planned marriage, even if he endangers the family peace. Back in Glasgow, Rukhsana reveals to him that she has become engaged to Amar. Casim talks to his friend Hammid, who advises against starting a relationship with Roisin, as he would destroy his family. Casim separates from Roisin.

Shortly thereafter, Casim saw his father forbid Tahara to study journalism in Edinburgh because she was supposed to be studying in Glasgow like her siblings. Casim takes the side of his parents in monosyllables and is cursed as a hypocrite by Tahara. When she leaves, Casim takes Tahara's side and tells his mother that he will not marry. On the same day he moves out of his parents' apartment and comes to live with Hammid. He later runs into Roisin in a café, but she evades him. She later learns from Tahara that Casim will not marry and has moved out. She takes up the relationship with him again and he now lives with her.

Shortly before the start of the new school year, Roisin wants to get a declaration of no objection from the parish priest. The priest refuses to explain because he has learned that Roisin is living with a Muslim and having sexual intercourse with him outside of marriage. Since Roisin is divorced, she is also considered a wife for the Catholic Church. Roisin is angry at the society and the narrow-mindedness of the priest, but gets the full-time position without the explanation, because the headmaster regards their love affair as a private matter. The Khan family and the entire Muslim community have since learned of Casim's relationship with Roisin. The family honor is destroyed, which among other things leads to Amar's family breaking off the engagement to Rukhsana. She seeks out Roisin and asks her to leave Casim, but Roisin refuses. Roisin, in turn, is told that she has been forcibly transferred to a non-denominational school by the school authorities over the head of her headmaster with immediate effect. A world is collapsing for them. When Casim cannot stay with her due to professional obligations, she locks him out of the shared apartment. The next day Casim tries in vain to reach her by phone. His mother had tried to reach him, and because he had Tahara on the phone briefly when he called home but the call was interrupted, he drove to his parents' house. Meanwhile, Rukhsana asks Roisin to get into her car because she wants to show her something. She drives them to the Khan family home. Here Roisin sees Casim being introduced to a young woman. It is Jasmine who was flown into Glasgow without Casim's knowledge. Rukhsana tells Roisin that the engagement was never broken and she flees in desperation. Casim, on the other hand, is outraged that his parents never told Jasmine's family anything about his decision and now want to force him to marry. Tahara manages to inform Casim of Roisin's presence and he hurries after her. He doesn't care that his father threatens to cast him out. Tahara too now has the courage to insist on studying in Edinburgh. In any case, she will maintain contact with Casim.

Casim searches for Roisin all day and finally finds her at home. She fears that he will pack his things, but he makes it clear to her that he will stay - into old age.
