Oscar Alfredo Ruggeri (born January 26, 1962 in Rosario ) is a former Argentine football player .

Career

The center- back Ruggeri began his career with the Boca Juniors together with Diego Maradona . With the Boca Juniors he became Argentine champion in 1981. In 1985 he moved to arch rivals River Plate and in 1986 won the Copa Libertadores , the South American Champions League. The strong, headed ruggeri was world champion in the same year with the Argentine national soccer team at the soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 . In 1988 Ruggeri moved to the first Spanish league to CD Logroñés and in 1990 was Spanish football champion with Real Madrid . In 1990 he moved back to Argentina to Vélez Sársfield after the 1990 World Cup in Italy . At the World Cup in Italy, he again directed the Argentine defense. His defense suffered only four goals in seven games, but lost the final against Germany 1-0 with a penalty from Andreas Brehme . In 1991 Ruggeri was named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year ( Olimpia de Oro ).

In 1994 Ruggeri took part in a football World Cup for the third time . In the USA , however, his team lost to Romania in the round of 16 . Ruggeri then ended his national team career as the new record national player after 97 international matches. Only Diego Simeone was able to break his record.

In 1997 he ended his career and has been working as a football coach ever since. From 1998 to 2001 he was in charge of San Lorenzo and then went to Mexico where he trained Chivas de Guadalajara (2001-2002) and UAG Tecos (2003). This was followed by brief engagements in Argentina ( CA Independiente 2003), Spain ( FC Elche 2003/2004) and Mexico ( Club América 2004). In 2006 he was again a coach at San Lorenzo in Argentina.
