The Brisbane Roar Women are an Australian women's football team based in Brisbane , Queensland . The professional team was founded in 2008 and plays in the W-League , the highest women's soccer league in the country. The team belongs to the football club Brisbane Roar FC , whose professional men's team plays in the A-League .

history

2008/09 - team formation and first season

In 2008, the Australian Football Federation (FFA) founded the W-League, the professional women's football league . At that time, Brisbane Roar FC was still called Queensland Roar FC . In order to participate in the new league as a founding member, the club set up its own women's football team. Former Welsh international Jeff Hopkins was signed as coach . In the first season of the team and the league Hopkins could lead the Queensland Roar to first place in the table at the end of the season. The team thus won the first "W-League Premiership" and moved into the play-offs . In the semifinals, the team met Sydney FC . After a 1: 1 . N V. Queensland Roar could with a 5: 4 in the penalty shoot- win. In the final, the Grand Final , the Queensland Roar managed a safe victory with a 2-0 win over Canberra United FC and thus became the "W-League Champion".

2009 - Second season

In 2009, Queensland Roar FC changed its name to Brisbane Roar FC. After the successful last season, the team managed to get into the play-offs again with third place in the table. In the semifinals they managed a 0-1 away win against the Central Coast Mariners . As in the previous year, the team was in the “Grand Final”. In front of 1,439 spectators, the Brisbane Roar Women lost 3-2 to Sydney FC in the final.

2010/11 - third season

With the third season the Brisbane Roar Women were able to establish their status as one of the top teams in the league. After a second place at the end of the season, the team moved into the play-offs. The semi-final against Canberra United FC won the club after a 2: 2 . Aet 4: 2 on penalties. For the third time in a row the women reached the "Grand Final" and played against Sydney FC again this year . In contrast to the previous year, the Brisbane Roars won 2-1 and became "W-League Champion" for the second time.

2011/12 - fourth season

The Brisbane Roar Women were able to achieve second place in the table at the end of the fourth season and move into the play-offs. The team won the semifinals against Sydney FC on penalties 4: 3 (1: 1 ae ). As in all previous seasons, the team reached the Grand Final again . In the final, the women met Canberra United FC and lost 3-2.

2012/13 - fifth season

After four seasons, each with a move into the play-off final, coach Jeff Hopkins left the Brisbane Roars. The Australian Belinda Wilson became the new trainer. In her first season she led the women's team to first place in the table and to win the "W-League Premiership". In the semi-finals of the play-offs, the team lost 3-2 to Sydney FC . The 2012/13 season was the first time since the league was in existence that the Brisbane Roar did not make it into the final.

2013/14 - Sixth season

For the 2013/14 season, the club signed the German national goalkeeper Nadine Angerer . The team reached fourth place in the table and thus entered the play-offs. In the semi-finals, the team won 2-1 against Canberra United FC and reached the play-offs final. In the Grand Final , the Brisbane Roar Women lost 2-0 to Melbourne Victory FC .

2014 - Seventh season

After the 2013/14 season, Nadine Angerer moved to the NWSL team Portland Thorns FC . Since the seasons of the W-League and the NWSL do not overlap, Angerer was loaned to the Brisbane Roar for the season in September 2014. With only four wins in the twelve games of the season, however, the team missed the playoffs and was only sixth in the table.
