In January 2001, Miyama accepted an invitation from the former Japanese national player and coach Midori Honda and joined the newly founded club Okayama Yunogō Belle in Mimasaka , Okayama Prefecture . There she played until December 2008 and scored 62 goals in 110 games.

In the first season of the US women's soccer league Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) in 2009 played Miyama for the team Los Angeles Sol . However, the association was dissolved in early 2010 for financial reasons.

After Los Angeles Sol was dissolved, Miyama was acquired by Saint Louis Athletica in January 2010 . However, this club also stopped playing on May 27, 2010 for financial reasons. All players were released on June 1, 2010. On June 10, 2010, Aya Miyama signed as a free agent for the Atlanta Beat club .

Since January 2011, Aya Miyama has been playing again with the number 10 for Okayama Yunogō Belle .

In the national team

Aya Miyama was inducted into the Japanese national team in 2003.

On March 19, 2003, she made her debut as a national player in an international friendly match against Thailand, her first goal she scored on June 9, 2003 against the Philippines in the 14th Asia Women Football Competition.

She participated in the 2003 World Cup , World Cup 2007 , the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games in 2010 in part. At the 2011 World Cup , she scored the winning goal in the first group game against New Zealand and the 1-1 equalizer in the final against the USA. Japan won the world title with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out, with Miyama converting the first penalty.

Miyama was part of the Japanese squad for the London Olympics as captain . She was in the starting line-up in all six games, u. a. in the final, lost 1: 2 against the USA , and won the silver medal with their team.

In May 2014 she and her team won the Asian Cup for the first time by beating defending champions Australia 1-0 and was named the best player of the tournament.

She was also nominated for the 2015 World Cup and used in all seven games, not missing a minute. In the first group game against Switzerland , she scored the first tournament goal for Japan with a converted penalty and was named "Player of the Game". Even after the games against Cameroon and Ecuador , she received this award. She was also not spared in the game against Ecuador, when coach Norio Sasaki spared some regular players. In the semi-final against England , she scored the 1-0 - again with a penalty - which the English were able to equalize seven minutes later - also with a penalty. An own goal by Englishwoman Laura Bassett in added time allowed Japan to reach the final. In the final against the USA, their team conceded four goals within the first 16 minutes. Ultimately, she received the "Bronze Ball" as the third best player. Miyama also took third place behind Carli Lloyd (USA) and Célia Šašić (Germany) in the 2015 World Player of the Year .
