Zé António (born March 14, 1977 in Torres Vedras ; actually José António dos Santos Silva ) is a former Portuguese football player .

career

Zé António's career began at SC União Torreense . He made the leap into the professional squad in the 94/95 season as a 17-year-old. At this time the SC União Torreense was playing in the second Portuguese league.

In the 98/99 season he agreed on a multi-year contract with FC Porto and moved to the northern Portuguese port city. There he did not make the leap into the team and was therefore awarded to Leca FC. He returned to FC Porto for the 1999/2000 season, where he again failed to make his sporting breakthrough. He was then loaned to the Portuguese first division club FC Alverca before moving permanently there for the 2001/02 season. At the end of the season, FC Alverca was relegated. Zé António then went to Varzim SC in 1915, but this club was relegated to the 2nd division at the end of the season. Looking for a new employer, he finally found himself in the 03/04 season at Académica Coimbra in the 1st Portuguese league.

He played there until the summer of 2005, because then Borussia Mönchengladbach secured the services of the central defender and provided him with a contract until 2007. In September 2006, Zé António extended the contract with Borussia Moenchengladbach ahead to 2009. Shortly thereafter, he was first in the squad for the Portugal national football team appointed, but he came in the two EM qualifiers on October 7 against Azerbaijan and on 11th October not used in Poland .

After Borussia's relegation in the summer of 2007, Zé António announced that he would no longer play for the “foals” in the future. It was therefore clear that the 64 Bundesliga games that Zé António had played for Mönchengladbach until then would not be added.

Since the search for a new club was initially unsuccessful, Zé António trained with the Mönchengladbach amateurs until the winter break in order to keep fit. On January 11, 2008 he finally moved to the Turkish first division club Vestel Manisaspor for half a year . After a 1: 2 home defeat against Kasımpaşa Istanbul , Manisaspor was already relegated one matchday before the end of the season. Thus, Zé António had to accept the fourth descent in his professional career.

On June 26, 2008, Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Zé António still had an ongoing contract until the end of June 2009, announced the premature termination of the contract. A day later, the defender signed a two-year contract with Spanish first division club Racing Santander . Since 2010, Zé António played for the Portuguese club União Leiria . In October 2011 he completed training sessions as a test player at the German second division club FC Ingolstadt . In the 2011/12 season Leiria ran into financial problems and Zé António was no longer used. In summer 2012 he moved to the second team at FC Porto . He stayed there until his retirement in 2015.
