A dos Cunhados is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Torres Vedras . It has 8,349 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
People have settled here since the Paleolithic . In the 9th century, a Christian monastery was built here, which resisted the attacks of the Moors , who had settled in nearby Torres Vedras in the course of their conquest from 711.
The first mention of today's place comes from the year 1527, as a place in a community around the monastery that existed at that time. The residents of the village began building a chapel here in 1570. The Archbishop of Lisbon allowed masses to be officially read there in 1572 and decided in 1581 to found A dos Cunhados' own parish.
In 1995 the place was raised to a Vila (small town).
The place name
The town's founders are said to have been three brothers-in-law ( Portuguese : Cunhado). So the original settlement was known as Lugar dos Cunhados (German: place of brother-in-law), according to tradition. The locally common place name that was created in this way is said to have changed from the abbreviated Dos Cunhados to A dos Cunhados (roughly: The brother-in-law).
Culture, sports and sights
The monuments of the municipality include the remains of the monastery founded in the 9th century ( Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça de Penafirme ), the Ruínas do Convento de Penafirme, junto à foz da Ribeira do Sorraia (English: ruins of the monastery of Penafirme, at the mouth of the Ribeira do Sorraia).
After various expansions and renovations, the monastery suffered fundamental damage in the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and became uninhabitable. The monks then rebuilt the monastery about 2.5 km away and the old monastery has since fallen into disrepair.
You can also visit prehistoric tombs in holes in the ground and caves ( grutas ) and the parish church Igreja Paroquial de A-dos-Cunhados (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz ) , which was built in the 18th century and decorated with azulejos .
The landscape of the municipality of A dos Cunhados is a protected part of the landscape of the Estremadura-Oeste , the western Estremadura .
The municipality has a number of seaside resorts and beaches, some of which have been awarded the Blue Flag , and which are occasionally the venue for sporting events, in particular the international surfing competition Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit - Festival Internacional de Desportos de Ondas on Praia do Mirante , at Santa Cruz.
