Philippe Suchard
Philippe Suchard (born October 9, 1797 in Boudry ( Canton Neuchâtel ), † January 14, 1884 in Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss chocolate manufacturer and entrepreneur .
Life
In September 1814 he began an apprenticeship as a confectioner in his brother Frédéric's confectionery shop in Bern, and in May 1824 he fulfilled a great dream by going on a trip to America.
The Swiss watches and embroidery that were in his hand luggage should make him a successful businessman. But he could not sell his goods with the success he wanted.
When he returned to Switzerland in 1825, he opened his first confectionery / chocolaterie in the city of Neuchâtel. As early as 1826, production moved to the vacant mill in the Neuchâtel suburb of Serrières. Philippe Suchard invented the Mélangeur - a machine for blending sugar and cocoa powder, as it is still used today.
Inspired by a trip to the Orient in 1865, Suchard had his house decorated with a minaret by the architect Louis-Daniel Perrier . In 1880 he opened his first factory abroad, in Lörrach, Germany . At the end of the 19th century, Suchard was the largest chocolate manufacturer in the world.
Suchard was a member of the Freemasons Association , his Lodge La Bonne Harmonie is based in Neuchâtel .
Today the Suchard chocolate factory belongs to Mondelēz International and no longer produces in Neuchâtel.
