Xai-Xai ( Portuguese pronunciation: [ʃai ʃai] until 1975 João Belo and Vila de Joao Belo ) is the capital of the south of Mozambique located province of Gaza .

geography

The city is located in the district of Xai-Xai on the main coastal road EN1 between the state capital Maputo in the southwest, which is almost 200 kilometers away, and Inhambane, which is 220 km (as the crow flies) northeast . The Limpopo River flows into the Indian Ocean at Xai-Xai .

history

The city was founded in 1897 under the name Chai-Chai . In 1928 it was named after the Portuguese colonial administrator who died in the same year and thus became Vila de João Belo . After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, the city was renamed Xai-Xai based on the original name.

In 1970 the Roman Catholic diocese Xai-Xai was established in the city.

In February 2000 the city was hit hard by the Limpopo flood. Sometimes the water was three meters high.

economy

During the Portuguese colonial period, the city developed through processing the cashew nuts and peanuts grown in the area . The plain in which Xai-Xai lies is used for growing rice .

10 kilometers from the mouth of the Limpopo is the beach Praia do Xai-Xai with an offshore coral reef. The beaches and the lagoon south of the Limpopo estuary used to be important for tourism.

In the colonial era, the city was also a service center with administrative facilities, a hospital and banks and a port.
