Xai-Xai is a district of the Gaza Province in Mozambique with the capital Chongoene . Its area borders in the north on the districts of Chokwé , Chibuto and Mandlakaze , in the west on the district Bilene , in the south on the city of Xai-Xai and the Indian Ocean and in the east on the district Mandlakaze.

The Xai-Xai district is traversed by the Limpopo, which flows into the Indian Ocean in the district. The Lumane is a right tributary of the Limpopo, all other rivers only flow in the rainy season. There are around 20 lakes in the district that are important for fishing.

The climate is tropical and humid, the annual precipitation is between 925 and 1,145 millimeters.

The district is 1,865 square kilometers and in 2013 had a population of 236,016 people. That is, the district is densely populated, it has a population density of 127 people per square kilometer.

The graph on the right clearly shows that the number of 17-year-olds is increasing sharply (there were 25 percent more 17-year-olds in 2014 than in 2009). This increase flattens up to the 5-year-olds (only 9 percent more in 2014 than in 2009) and then increases again to the newborns (14 percent more newborns in 2014 than in 2009).

As in most of the districts in Mozambique, the illiteracy rate in Xai-Xai is very high, especially among women and especially among older women. 65 percent of women between 40 and 49 years of age cannot read or write, compared to over 90 percent of those over 60.

Facilities and services

There are 122 primary schools ( Primárias) and fourteen secondary schools (Secundárias) in the district. 77 of the primary schools are public schools and 45 are private schools, and all of the secondary schools are public (as of 2013).

There is one hospital, eleven health centers, and three outpatient departments in Xai-Xai.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2007, six percent of the population had access to electricity and fifty percent had a radio.

Agriculture

In 2010, there were 46,000 farms in Xai-Xai. With a few exceptions, they were all small or medium-sized enterprises, the average cultivated area was one hectare. The highest yields were with cassava, corn, beans, sweet potatoes and peanuts (as of 2003).

Natural resources

Besides sand and shale, titanium is the only ore that is mined.

The EN1 national road, which connects Maputo with Inhambane, runs through Xai-Xai and crosses the Limpopo River in the district.

tourism

In Xai-Xai there are pristine reefs on the coast in Chongoene and Zongoene, as well as swimming and windsurfing opportunities in the lakes. Boat trips are offered on the Limpopo.
