José Luis Moreira da Encarnação (born May 30, 1941 in São Domingos de Rana near Cascais , Portugal ) is a Portuguese computer scientist and inventor of the graphic standard Graphical Kernel System (GKS). He played a major role in the advancement of computer graphics .

Encarnação is a professor emeritus at the Technical University of Darmstadt and works as a technology and innovation consultant for governments, multinational companies, research institutions and foundations. He is also sustainably involved in the conception and development of research projects and innovation strategies for the socio-economic development of emerging countries. He is a member of the thematic network information and communication technology and ICT-related activities of the German Academy of Science and Engineering ( acatech ) and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW). He is an elected member of the SIGGRAPH Academy of the Association for Computing Machinery (USA).

Life

José Luis Encarnação, born in Portugal, went to school in the Escola Salesiana do Estoril and has lived in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1959.

He is a graduate engineer. and Dr.-Ing. in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1970 as a scholarship holder from the Gulbenkian Foundation .

academic career

Encarnação began his career in computer graphics in 1967 at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB). Before he came to Darmstadt, he held research and academic positions at the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin (1968–1972) and at Saarbrücken University (1972–1975).

Since 1975 he has been a professor of computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he is head of the Graphic-Interactive Systems (GRIS) department. Since October 1st, 2009 he has been Professor Emeritus at TU Darmstadt.

In 1977 he and his research group introduced the Graphic Core System (GKS) as the first ISO standard for computer graphics (ISO / IEC 7942).

José Luis Encarnação is the author or co-author of more than 500 publications and specialist articles in international reviewed journals and prominent specialist conferences. Since 1975 he has been responsible for around 200 doctorates as a supervisor and / or first speaker at home and abroad; More than 900 study and diploma theses have been carried out in the institutions he manages and he is responsible for. More than 50 of his doctoral students have become professors at universities and colleges.

Professional background

Encarnação was founder in 1987, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) in Darmstadt from 1987 to 2006 and retired as Fraunhofer director in 2006.

From 1995 to 2001 he was an elected member of the Senate of the Fraunhofer Society in Munich. From 2002 to 2006 he was a member of the Presidium and from July 2001 to October 2006 chairman of the IuK group of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which had resulted from the merger with GMD .

Encarnação was a member of the EU Advisory Group for the 6th and 7th Framework Programs in the field of information technology (ISTAG) from 2001 to 2007, its chairman from 2002 to 2004 and vice-chairman from 2005 to 2007.

March 2017 he became chairman of the international selection and evaluation committee, nominated by the Portuguese Research Foundation (FCT) for the establishment of the "Collaborative Laboratories" (Co-Labs) in Portugal .

Founding activities

In 1980 Encarnação was one of the founders of Eurographics , the European Association for Computer Graphics; from 1980 to 1984 he was its chairman and from 1985 to 1991 chairman of the advisory board.

Between 1975 and 2009 he founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (1987), INI-GraphicsNet (1999) and over the years more than 15 spin-offs worldwide (Germany, Spain, Portugal, USA, Singapore). Under his leadership, the INI-GraphicsNet (International Network of Institutions for Advanced Education, Training and R&D in Computer Graphics Technology, Systems and Applications) was built up as a network, which today consists of legally independent, but technically cooperating and technology- Transfer driving institutions in Germany, Italy, Panama, Portugal, Singapore, Spain and USA exists. After his retirement, this network operates under the new name GraphicsMedia.net GmbH.

honors and awards

Encarnação has been a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery since 1996, a Fellow of the Eurographics Society and an Honorary Fellow of Eurographics since 2006.

In 2001 Encarnação was elected as a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW, formerly the Prussian Academy of Sciences), and in 2002 he became a full member of the Convention of Technical Sciences of the Union of German Academies of Sciences (acatech). In 2017 he was elected honorary member of the Society for Research Transfer (GFFT).

In August 2018 he was elected a member of the SIGGRAPH Academy of the Association for Computing Machinery in the USA.

National and international national honors

Encarnação he was awarded several orders of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (also: Federal Cross of Merit):

  • 1983: Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon
  • 1995: Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class
  • 2006: Large Federal Cross of Merit

The federal state of Hesse awarded him the cultural award (for science) of the state of Hesse in 2000 . In 2001 he was awarded the high order of St. Jacob of the Sword by the country of Portugal .

In 2010, in recognition of its accomplishments in the field of computer graphics , the Eurographics Portuguese Chapter established the annual Professor José Luís Encarnação Award for student achievement in scientific publications in the field of computer graphics.
