The Zhejiang University , shortly ZJU or Zheda ( Chinese 浙江大學 / 浙江大学 , pinyin Zhejiang Daxue , English Zhejiang University , shortly 浙大 , Zheda ) is one of the oldest universities in the People's Republic of China . It was first founded in 1897 as the Qiushi Academy ( 求 是 書院 / 求 是 书院 , Qíushì Shūyuàn , English Qiushi Academy ). Since 1928 it has been officially called Zhejiang National University . The campus is located in the capital of the southeastern Chinese province of Zhejiang , Hangzhou , the approximately 180 kilometers southwest of Shanghai is located. Zhejiang University is one of the leading research universities in China. It is one of the nine elite Chinese universities and is known worldwide.
Campus and Faculties
Yuquan Campus
The Yuquan Campus is the main campus of the university. Mainly natural science courses are offered here. Yuquan houses the natural sciences faculties of mechanical engineering and energy technology , materials science and chemical engineering , electrical engineering , information technology , computer science and biomedicine and device technology , as well as the faculties of public administration , architecture and management . The Chu Cooking Honors College is also located in Yuquan .
Campus Zijingang
The Zijingang campus is generally intended for first-year students from all faculties. Here are foreign languages taught.
Xixi campus
Natural sciences are also taught on Campus Xixi . Other faculties are those for economics , law , education , social science , biology and media and international cultures . The Chu Cooking Honors College is also located in Xixi .
Huajiachi campus
The Hajiachi campus includes the faculties of environmental science, namely biology , biology systems engineering and food science , environment and raw materials , agriculture and biotechnology and zoology .
Hubin Campus
The Hubin campus is the medical campus that houses the medicine and pharmacy faculties .
Zhijiang campus
The Zhijiang Campus, similar to the Zijingang Campus, was originally reserved for applicants, but today it houses adult education facilities affiliated to the university.

Library
With an area of 84,000 m² (as of Jan 2005) and over 6.26 million volumes (as of Sept. 2005), the university library is one of the largest in China.
Further libraries are located on the individual campuses. Yuquan houses the science and technology branch library, and Xixi houses the science and literature branch library. The sub-library for agricultural sciences is located in Huajiachi, while the campus holds the sub-library for medicine. In Zijingang there is also a separate library for new students.
Rankings
Zhejiang University is regularly ranked among the top three universities in the country. This includes:
