Su Buqing
Su Buqing , Chinese苏步青 (born September 23, 1902 in Pingyang , Zhejiang Province , † March 17, 2003 in Shanghai ), was a Chinese mathematician . Because of his pioneering work, he was called the "first geometer in the Orient".
After graduating from middle school, he traveled to Japan to acquire further knowledge there. There he studied first at the Tokyo Industrial University and then at the Northeast Imperial University . He graduated from here in 1927 and received a doctorate four years later.
During his studies, Buqing dealt with general curved surfaces and found four conical surfaces. Mathematicians called his discovery "Sus conical surfaces".
After receiving his doctorate, he refused to stay in Japan and decided to go back to the Middle Kingdom. He took up teaching at Zhejiang University . In 1952 he became dean at Fudan University , which appointed him honorary president 31 years later. For sixty years he gave students mathematical knowledge.
In his younger years, Buqing's research focused primarily on affine and projective differential geometry . After 1950 , the focus was on the differential geometry of generalized spaces , conjugate networks and computer-aided geometric constructions. He edited over ten monographs, including "Affine Differentialgeometrie".
His work was honored u. a. with the national science conference award and the second national scientific and technological advancement award. From 1955 he was a member of the mathematics and physics department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the standing committee of the academy, also honorary president of the central committee of the Chinese Democratic League , vice-chairman of the seventh and eighth CPPCC and the central committee of the Chinese Democratic League . He also sat on the standing committee of the fifth and sixth National People's Congresses .
In his honor, the Chinese Ministry of Education plans to award the Su Buqing Prize to important mathematicians every four years from 2007 onwards .
