Xie Xuejing

Xie Xue-Jing ( Chinese  謝 學 錦  /  谢 学 锦 ; May 21, 1923 in Beijing - February 24, 2017 ) was a Chinese geochemist who won the AAG gold medal in 2007. Xie was considered to be the father of geochemical mapping in China.

biography

Xie lived in Shanghai and was born in Beijing on May 21, 1923 . From 1941 to 1945, Xie studied physics and chemistry at the Zhejiang University College of Sciences . Xie also studied chemistry at Chongqing University.

After graduation, Xie mainly worked at the Institute for Geophysical and Geochemical Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was elected a CAS academic in 1980. Xie also taught as a professor at Changchun Geological College (later merged with Jilin University ) in Jilin Province , China.

Research work

In the 1970s and 1980s, Xie proposed and directed the National Geochemical Mapping Project and the China-Regional Geochemistry-National Reconnaissance (RGNR) project. He also supported these programs technically, initially by mapping the gold mines in Chinese territory as a priority.

This RGNR project lasted at least 24 years and scanned more than six million km² of mainland China. The useful information from this mega-program has contributed to approximately 80% of new mineral discoveries in China over the past two decades.

In the 1990s, Xie also contributed to international standardization for the methodology of global geochemical mapping.

Xie developed some new approaches in the search for giant buried ore deposits. Xie also suggested some deeply penetrating geochemical techniques and methods.

Xie held many academic positions:

  • Deputy Director, Institute for Geophysical and Geochemical Research, CAS.
  • Honorary Director, Institute for Geophysical and Geochemical Research, CAS.
  • Member of the Executive Committee of the IGCP Committee, UNESCO .
  • Associate Editor and the member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geochemical Exploration
  • Member of the Editorial Committee of Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis
  • Member of the Central Executive Committee and Chairman of the Analytical Technology Committee of the Global Geochemical Mapping Working Group, IUGS .

honors and awards

Xie has received many honors and awards from both China and international organizations. The most important international award was the prestigious AAG Gold Medal from the Association of Applied Geochemists in June 2007 at the 23rd International Geochemical Exploration Symposium Banquet in Oviedo , Spain , for "his outstanding scientific achievements in exploration geochemistry".
