Global Media Group (formerly Controlinveste ) is a Portuguese holding company in the media sector. The company is based on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon , at Praça Marquês de Pombal .

Company development

The Global Media Group was created by media mogul Joaquim Oliveira in 2005, initially as a control investor from the company Olivedesportos , which he had previously founded in 1984. It is now one of the largest media groups in Portugal, with a presence in the press , radio , television and internet . The group also manages a diverse range of holdings in companies in advertising, media communications, content production and design, and telecommunications and sports.

In 1994 Controlinveste launched its first press title, the sports daily O Jogo . In 1998 Sport TV started in partnership with RTP and ZON Multimédia , a pay-TV channel that focuses exclusively on sports. With the growing importance of the Internet and multimedia, the company founded Sportinveste Multimédia in 2001 together with Portugal Telecom . This company is responsible for managing the digital multimedia operations of the two leading football clubs in Portugal, FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon . Given the great success of this television channel, the Sport TV2, Sport TV3 and Sport TV HD channels have recently been launched.

The Global Media Group has important active holdings in the field of television broadcasting rights for competitions in professional football in Portugal and abroad (such as the national team , Primeira Liga , Taça de Portugal , Liga-Pokal, Champions-League and UEFA Cup ) as well as sponsorship and advertising rights in sport. Under the leadership of Joaquim Oliveira, the media company publishes newspapers such as Diário de Notícias , Jornal de Notícias , the 24Horas and O Jogo and magazines such as Volta ao Mundo and Evasões .

In November 2013 the Controlinveste group was restructured and sold all of its newspapers to the Global Media Group , including Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Notícias, O Jogo, Açoriano Oriental and the radio station TSF. Investors are an Angolan group led by António Mosquito with a stake of 27.5%, as well as Luis Montez (15%) and the two banks Banco Comercial Português and Novo Banco (each 15%). The founder and previous sole owner Joaquim Oliveira still holds 27.5% of the media group. The sports pay channel Sport TV was excluded from the deal.

The group, besides the newspapers and magazines, also has a share in the news agency Lusa , as well as two printing plants ( Funchalense in Lisbon and NavePrinter in Porto ), as well as two press sales companies.
