Lilian "Lil" Malmkvist (* 1938 in Landskrona , Sweden ) is a former Swedish pop singer. In Germany she became known for her record releases in the 1960s.

Musical career

Lilian Malmkvist grew up with seven siblings, among them her older sister Siw Malmkvist , who later experienced a remarkable career as a singer in Germany. Lilian began performing with the John Strand Orchestra as a teenager, and in the late 1950s she went to Helsingborg to work with the Herbert Frost Orchestra. Through the mediation of producer and PR agent Torsten Adenby, she received a record deal with the Swedish label Metronome and moved to Stockholm . Her records were released under the stage name Lil Malmkvist, and since her sister Siw was also under contract with Metronome, an EP record was also released containing two duets with Lil and Siw. In 1961 Lil changed record labels, going first to BFB and later to PEP. In 1962 she made her breakthrough in Sweden with the title Klang, min vackra bjällra , which was a great success in Sweden.

In 1962 Lil Malmkvist's record career began in Germany. Ariola had signed her and released her first single in September 1962 . On the A side was the title Johnny My Love , a cover version of the McGuire Sisters title More Hearts are Broken That Way . For the other singles, too, Lil Malmkvist was set to cover versions by Ariola. This was evident in the second Ariola single with the A-side Bobby's Girl . This title is the German version of the English recording of the same name with Marcie Blane , which reached number three in the US charts in December 1962. For Lil Malmkwist, the version with a text by Lambert Fleming was the greatest success in Germany, it came in 16th in the top 50 of the music magazine Musikmarkt and stayed in the hit list for twelve weeks. What is remarkable about the B-side is the fact that the title Da I meet you, Charly is one of the rare licensed productions of the GDR label Amiga . Amiga had already released the song in the summer of 1962 with the singer Ruth Brandin in the GDR. Lil Malmkwist's third German single was dedicated to the German Schlager Festival in 1963 . Ariola had selected the two festival contributions I want a cowboy as a man ( Gitte ) and Piccolina ( Leo Leandros ), which she had covered by Lil Malmkvist (A-side) and Jan & Kjeld . With the winning title Ich will 'nen Cowboy als Mann , Lil Malmkvist once again reached the music market top 50, where she was rated 20th as the best placement. By the end of 1964, another three Ariola singles by Lil Malmkvist had been released. This was unsuccessful and the record company ended the collaboration with the Swede.

Lil Malmkvist continued her career in Sweden, where she came third on the Swedish hit lists in 1963 with the cover version of the successful country song by Hank Locklin We're Gonna Go Fishin ' (sw: Fina Fisken ). She later worked in the IBM canteen in London and returned to her birthplace in Landskrona in 1970. She then limited her musical activities to participating in the town choir.
