Ruth Brandin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruth Brandin (born February 27, 1940 in Altenweddingen ; real name Ruth Langhammer ) is a German pop singer . She is considered the GDR's first teenage idol and was one of the great female pop stars alongside Bärbel Wachholz , Helga Brauer and Chris Doerk in the 1960s.

Biography and artistic work

Ruth Brandin, who grew up in a musical family with four siblings, spent her childhood in the Magdeburg Börde . Since she was very talented in sports, she attended the sports school in Magdeburg , which she had to leave due to an inexplicable decline in performance. A heart defect was not diagnosed until later. In 1957 she went to East Berlin . Here she trained as a nurse at the Buch Clinic . A patient, the then successful singer Jenny Petra , gave her the address of the GDR record company Amiga .

In January 1958 she sang there and received a sponsorship contract. In August 1959, Ruth Brandin began an apprenticeship at the Berlin Broadcasting Studio . At the same time she became a member of the women's quartet Die Kolibris , a singing group that was primarily used for background tasks and to which Monika Grimm (later with the Tahiti Tamoures ) belonged. Before she started her solo career, she first sang in a duet with her sister Christa (stage name Evelyn). They called themselves Ruth & Evelyn and produced the title Are you alone and nobody is like you by Ralf Petersen and Bernhard Bohlke at Amiga .

Her first solo record Das can be the man for life was not released because the composer, Reimer Mierke , had fled to the West. Only five years later the single appeared in a new recording under the composer's pseudonym Harald Jürgen. From June 1963 Ruth Brandin worked as a soloist with great success. Some of her hits were All I love about you so much , The song from the old record cabinet (with Monika Grimm), Parrot-Twist , Nobody has kissed me at the twist , Don't talk about love , From apple seeds and noodle stars , Stay until tomorrow and Parking prohibited . In the mid-1960s she sang the titles Love, love, love , Nur im Traum and La Luna in a duet with Volkmar Böhm .

Since Brandin did not bow to the demands of the Ministry of State Security , for example to spy on her colleagues, her career was severely hampered. So she could no longer publish records. In 1972 Brandin ended her career as a musician because of the reprisals. After the death of her first husband, she became director of the well-known Café Nord on Schönhauser Allee in East Berlin. In 1985 she left the GDR. Since the death of her last partner in 2012, Brandin has been living secluded in Berlin.

Theater & Philharmonie Thuringia premiered the play It Wasn't Great Love - The Ruth Brandin Story at Theater Altenburg on February 18, 2018 . It comes from Svea Haugwitz and Manuel Kressin and is dedicated to Brandin's life story; she was involved in the development.
