The Congregation

The Congregation , also known as The English Congregation in North America , was a British pop vocal group consisting of Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway (also known as songwriters) as well as John Burgess and Brian Keith.

For their biggest hit, Softly Whispering I Love You , The Congregation hired a mixed ninety-piece choir and orchestra. The single, released in 1971, reached number 4 in Great Britain and Switzerland , number ten in Germany , and number 29 in the USA . In the United States and Canada , the band released under the name The English Congregation to avoid confusion with The Mike Curb Congregation .

Softly Whispering I Love You became a million seller and made the formation a classic one-hit wonder . However, the authors Cook and Greenaway had already recorded the song in 1967 under their then stage name David & Jonathan . Keith also had some experience as a singer with Plastic Penny ( Everything I Am ) in the late 1960s .

The group released a handful of singles and even three long-playing records , which, however, no longer had any notable success. Only the successor single Jesahel in 1972 was a little better known beyond top 40 placements. Originally by the Italian formation Delirium, the song was a club hit in some European countries.

The band, conceived as a pure studio project, was far too big for live performances or tours . Due to a lack of success, the project dissolved in 1973.
