Earth & Fire was a Dutch pop group from the 1970s. It was founded on November 23, 1968 in The Hague .
Band history
Earth & Fire became known in their homeland in 1970 with the single Seasons , a track composed by the singer and guitarist of the band Golden Earring , George Kooymans. In the same year the band landed further hits in the Netherlands with Ruby Is the One and Wild and Exciting .
From 1971 onwards, Earth & Fire developed their musical style from rock with echoes of Jefferson Airplane in the direction of Mellotron- heavy symphonic / progressive rock . The following year the band reached number 1 on the Dutch charts for the first time with Memories ; in Germany they had their first chart placement with this title, but just missed the top 30. The band released their only international hit at the end of 1979 with the single Weekend , with which they topped the German charts for four weeks in May 1980. The band's sound had become more poppy over the years, the rock elements faded into the background.
The main forces behind the band were singer Jerney Kaagman and twin brothers Gerard and Chris Koerts. The other band members changed over time. After Chris Koerts left the band in November 1979, Earth & Fire fell apart in 1983. A comeback tour followed in 1987 with a new line-up and a last album in 1989.
The first LP Earth & Fire appeared in the Netherlands structured like a book of matches, in the so-called "Matchbox cover". The British version, designed by the artist Roger Dean , shows the roots of a large tree, through which the inner shell, printed with the glowing interior of the earth, shines through in some places. If you pull out the inner cover, you can see a woman lounging on a glowing beach.
