Weekend is a song by Earth & Fire that was released as a single from the 1979 album Reality Fills Fantasy . It was the group's second number one hit in their native Netherlands, as well as the first and only number one for them in Germany and Switzerland .
Origin and content
The song was written by keyboardist Gerard Koerts and produced by the group together with Gerrit Jan Leenders . The pop song has some elements of disco and reggae . The lyrics are about a weekend relationship. However, the protagonist realizes that it can't go on like this and that she doesn't want to be a lover for the weekend only.
Publication and reception
The single was released by Vertigo in November 1979 . The B-side of most editions contained the title Answer Me , only the Swedish edition contained Fire of Love . The song reached number one in the German single charts and was placed there for four weeks from April 28 to May 25, 1980, a total of 29 chart weeks. In Austria it reached number 14 (four chart weeks) and number one in Switzerland (14 chart weeks), as well as in the Netherlands (also 14 chart weeks) and in Belgium ( Flanders ), where it was placed for twelve weeks. On March 24, 1980 Earth & Fire performed the song at disco on ZDF .
In 1988 the title of Earth and Fire was re-released as Weekend '88 .
Cover versions
A German-language cover version from 1980 with the title No girl for the weekend comes from Conny Morin . In the ZDF hit parade , she performed the song on July 28, 1980 , but could not place in the top three. In 2002 Kid Q covered the song under the title This Feeling and reached number 25 in Germany and number 58 in Switzerland. In 2003 the version of Scooter , Weekend! , which became an international success and reached number two in the German, number four in the Austrian and number 37 of the Swiss charts. Also in the charts of the Scandinavian countries and in the Netherlands it consistently reached top ten positions and in Ireland number one. In 2019 a version of DJ Herzbeat feat. Sarah , who climbed to number 83 in the German charts. There are also versions of the Bloodhound Gang ( Weekend! ), Lizot , Olga Scheps ( Weekend! ), The Disco Light Orchestra , Chips , Skyberg , Gry and The Hiltonaires .
