Auguste Nicolas Trémont (born December 30, 1892 in Luxembourg ; † October 23, 1980 ibid) was a Luxembourgish sculptor , medalist and painter . He worked mainly in Paris and specialized in animal sculptures.

Life

Trémont studied at the crafts school in Luxembourg. In October 1909 he came to Paris and became a student of the " École des arts décoratifs ". The outbreak of the First World War surprised him on a visit to Luxembourg. While trying to return to Paris, he was arrested by the Germans at the Swiss border. After he was released from prison, he returned to Luxembourg, where he stayed until 1918. He worked as a draftsman in the Dudelange steelworks. It was there that he became friends with Aloyse Meyer, the future president of ARBED. Pencil in hand, he studied the workers at work. After the armistice, he returned to Paris. He studied at the " École des Beaux Arts ". He created portraits and pictures of Paris until one day he discovered the “ Jardin des Plantes ”, the zoological garden, where he found his calling. When asked why he was depicting animals, he replied: "Because it was the most difficult".

He is not satisfied with drawings; 1924 is the year of the first sculptures. He exhibited his works in the “Galerie Ruhlmann”, the later “Galerie Edgar Brandt”, and the “Galerie Malesherbes”. The 1930s were his most productive. In Paris he also created the two large lions that adorn the entrance of the town house in Luxembourg. He spent the Second World War in Paris. At the end of the war he returned to Luxembourg and created monuments for the victims of the war.

In 1918 he was awarded the Prix ​​Grand-Duc Adolphe art prize. Images of Auguste Trémont can be found on numerous stamps.
