Kemal Burkay (* 1937 in the village of Kızılkale in Mazgirt / Tunceli ) is a Kurdish writer and politician.

Life

Burkay completed his school education in Tunceli and went to Akçadağ in Malatya in 1949 to become a teacher. He also attended the Ergani University in Diyarbakır . In 1955 he completed his teacher training. From 1956 to 1960 he studied at the Faculty of Law in Ankara . In 1959, he and several other people were charged with Kurdish propaganda. This trial became known as the Trial of 49 . In 1964 he began his work as a lawyer in Elazığ and published his first magazine with Çira ( Eng .: candle), a Turkish-language art magazine that appeared six times.

Two years later he moved with his law firm to Tunceli, where he published the magazine Ezilenler (Eng .: The Oppressed), which appeared 25 times. In 1965 Burkay became a member of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP) and helped TIP organize their party in the cities of Elazığ, Bingöl , Tunceli and Erzincan .

He was imprisoned for four months in 1966 because of an article in the magazine Yeni Akış (New Current) about the Kurdish question . In 1969 and 1971 he was again charged with political motives and arrested. After his last prison sentence, he went to Europe via Lebanon . When the Turkish government passed an amnesty law in 1974, Burkay returned to Turkey. Then he and other people founded the Socialist Party of Kurdistan (Kurd .: Partiya Sosyalist a Kurdistan - PSK). The PSK published its first party leaflet in 1975 under the name Özgürlük Yolu (German: Path of Freedom). At first the magazine was only Turkish, later also Kurdish , had print runs of 5,000 and appeared 44 times. Burkay wrote there under his name and under various pseudonyms.

In 1977 the magazine Roja Welat appeared , half of which was Turkish and half Kurdish. Up to the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , 12 issues were published. The PSK later founded its own publishing house called Wesanxana Rîya Azadî and published books on the Kurdish issue. Many books and magazines were confiscated and their authors sued. In 1980 the publishing house was banned. Burkay then left Turkey again and continued his work in exile .

Burkay has written around 40 books and many articles in Turkish and Kurdish over the years. Before the emergence of the PKK , the PSK had great influence among the Kurds abroad. Burkay remained party chairman of the PSK from its foundation until 2003.

After his 31-year exile, Burkay returned to Turkey on July 30, 2011. He was met by a large crowd at Istanbul Airport.

Between the end of 2012 and 2014, Burkay was chairman of the Hak ve Özgürlükler Partisi .
