New York State Route 23B ( NY 23B ) is an east-west running state route in western Columbia County in New York , United States . The route is a former section of New York State Route 23 , which runs for a length of 10.85 km from State Route New York State Route 9G southwest of Hudson to State Route New York State Route 9H in Claverack . Over the Rip Van Winkle Bridgeit allows direct access to the City of Hudson, whereas NY 23 passes south. NY 23B was dedicated in the late 1950s after NY 23 was given its current routing south of Hudson.

Route description

NY 23B branches off the main route NY 23 five kilometers south of the City of Hudson and about 800 m east of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge in Greenport . The intersection is on the Olana State Historic Site and is 300 m west of the Columbia-Greene Community College campus . Route 9G and Route 23 run together to the west of this point, NY 9G leaves NY 23 here and, like NY 23B, heads towards Hudson. NY 23B is the westernmost thoroughfare on the east bank of the Hudson River between the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and the Hudson, but it is separated from the river by the 167 m high Mount Merino.

Together with US 9, NY 23B runs east through Hudson.

After both streets reach Hudson's suburb, the maintenance obligation of NY 9G and NY 23B changes from state to city . while this leads through the marshy South Bay. The route then heads into the Downtown District , where it follows Third Street for several blocks to Columbia Street. Here NY 9G and NY 23B run east along Columbia Street to the intersection with US Highway 9 at Park Place. NY 9G ends here; NY 23B continues eastward on Columbia Street, now together with US 9. At the next intersection, both routes turn onto Green Street. At Fairview Avenue, US 9 branches off from NY 23B and heads north, while NY 23B heads east as a separate route for the first time. NY 23B leaves Hudson and heads back to Greenport after the junction with the southern terminus of New York State Route 66 on Columbia Street.

In Greenport, entertainment from NY 23B falls back to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Within Greenport, the route remains only one kilometer before it also crosses the border to the Town of Claverack with Claverack Creek . The route ends about two and a half kilometers further southeast in the hamlet of Claverack at the junction with New York State Route 9H and NY 23. Here NY 23 and NY 9H separate; NY 23 continues east instead of NY 23B.

history

When the first highways were signposted in New York in 1924, the route of today's NY 23B between Third Street in Hudson and Claverack was designated as NY 23. To the west of Hudson, NY 23 took a ferry across the Hudson River to Athens . The Rip Van Winkle Bridge over the Hudson River between Catskill and Greenport was opened to traffic on July 2, 1935; NY 23, however, only received a new route over the bridge when the ferry between Athens and Hudson was shut down in the late 1940s. In the late 1950s, the route between the eastern end of the bridge and Claverack was relocated to a new, more southerly route over Bell Pond . The previously valid route over Hudson was re-dedicated as NY 23B.
