Life

Gifford was born on July 10, 1823 in Greenfield , New York, the son of a steel contractor and grew up in Hudson . He attended Brown University in Providence and came to New York in 1845. Here he studied drawing and anatomy with John Rubens Smith . A study trip to the Catskill and Bershire Mountains in 1846 led him to landscape painting, although he was not trained in that direction. His early works were very much influenced by the work of Thomas Cole , without taking over his penchant for religious motifs. Gifford first exhibited them in 1847 at the National Academy of Design . In 1851 he became an associate member and in 1854 a full member.

From 1855 to 1857 Gifford toured Europe and met John Ruskin and the works of John Constable and William Turner there. During a visit to the World Exhibition in Paris, he also came into contact with the works of the Barbizon School . He spent the winter of 1856 to 1857 in Rome with Albert Bierstadt and Worthington Whittredge and then toured Naples and Capri with Bierstadt . In the same year he returned to New York and rented a studio located in the 10 th Street, which he retained until his death.

During the American Civil War , he served three years on the Northern side. In 1868 he traveled to Europe again, first visiting Italy and later Greece, Syria, Egypt and Turkey. In 1870 he traveled with Wittredge and John F. Kensett to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and joined an expedition led by Ferdinand Hayden , which was to serve the geological and geographical survey of Wyoming . In 1874 he made another trip to the American West, this time to California , Oregon , British Columbia and even Alaska , and occasional trips to Maine and Canada . He married in 1877, but Gifford died of malaria and pneumonia in 1880 .
