The Barnacken near Horn in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Lippe is 446.4  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in the Teutoburg Forest . It is not far from the seam line between this low mountain range and the Eggegebirge , but according to its natural geographic allocation it is also included in the latter mountain range.

geography

location

The Barnacken rises in the southeast of the Teutoburg Forest (called Lippischer Wald) in the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park about 3 km west-northwest of the junction to the south-facing Egge Mountains in the Silberbach valley at the Silbermühle . Its summit is about 3 km southwest of Horn , a south-western district of Horn-Bad Meinberg , and just under 3.5 km (as the crow flies ) northeast of Kohlstädt , a district of the neighboring community Schlangen .

Its north-northeast branch is the Kleine Rigi ( 387.7  m ), its eastern branch the Kartoffelberg (approx.  385  m ) and its western branch the Mordkopf ( 408.6  m ); they belong to Horn-Bad Meinberg. Its southern branch is the Padberg ( 437.5  m ) , which belongs to the community of Schlangen .

Natural allocation

According to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany (of the former Institute for Regional Studies), the Barnacken belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Upper Weserbergland (No. 36), in the main unit Egge area (363) and in the subunit Egge (363.1) to the natural area Horner Egge (363.10). To the west, its landscape falls in the direction of the Schlangener Forsthaus Kreuzkrug into the main unit group Unteres Weserbergland (No. 53), in the main unit Bielefelder Osning (530) and in the subunit Osning-Kamm (530.1) in the natural area Lipper Forest (530.12) - thus it leads over into the Teutoburg Forest .

Because of the aforementioned affiliation to the Egge area, the Barnacken (mostly part of the Teutoburg Forest) would represent the second highest elevation in the Egge Mountains. According to this definition, the Thune ( called Strothe there) and Bundesstraße 1 are the border to the south-facing Eggegebirge or Westliche Eggevorland , which extends east of the Barnackens over the saddle of the Rhine-Weser watershed , the valley of the Zangenbach (see  Wasserscheide and rivers ) and from there northwest over the Knickenhagen ( 314.1  m ), along the Externsteine to the Bärenstein ( 318.1  m ). With the Bärenstein north of the Barnacken, the main ridge of the Eggegebirge, which from there mainly faces south, begins, which here is slightly shifted to the east against that of the Bielefeld Osnings.

In contrast, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) assigns the Barnacken to the Bielefelder Osning (Osning is an old name of the Teutoburg Forest), the southeastern ridge of the Teutoburg Forest, which also corresponds to the orography , the common classification and the geographical location described above . The allocation of the Barnacken is one of the very few demarcations in which the BfN deviates from the boundaries of the Federal Agency.

Mountain height and altitude information

The Barnacken is 446.4  m high. On topographic maps , a few meters east of the mountain peak, there is a trigonometric point at an altitude of 446.1  m and two heights are recorded in the west of the summit region: 444.8  m and 442.9  m . A forest path branches off 310 m west of the mountain peak at an altitude of 440.8  m .

Watershed and rivers

A northern part of the Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Barnacken , which merges 6.5 km further northwest into the Ems- Weser watershed. Sooner or later the water of all flowing waters that arise southwest of the Barnackens flows into the Lippe and thus into the Rhine . In contrast, the north flank drains through the Werre and the east flank through the Emmer to the Weser .

The Wiembecke rises north of the Barnackens and is fed by the Zangenbach, which runs east of the mountain, flows northeast through Horn and flows into the Berlebecke tributary of the Werre . A few kilometers east-south-east of the mountain, beyond the Zangenbachtal, flows the Silberbach , which runs northeast through Veldrom to Leopoldstal and flows into the Emmer tributary Heubach . On the southeast in Eggegebirge situated width neck, beyond the B 1 (s. U. Transport and hiking ), springs the Thune (Strothe) , which passes the southern slopes of the Barnackens and extends in northeast-southwest direction along the B 1 and further southwest joins the lip .

Orographically , the saddle of the watershed, located on the B 1 between the villages of Schlangen with the Strothetal and Horn with the Zangenbachtal , which reaches a height of 319.8  m here , is by far the lowest notch , since the ridge to the northwest for at least 7 km, to the south remains above this altitude for more than 30 km.
