Chatham is a village in Columbia County in the US state of New York , about 40 km southeast of Albany . It is about half in the parishes of Chatham and Ghent , is 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) and in 2010 had a population of 1,770.
Chatham was once an important rail hub on the New York Central Railroad . This is where the Boston – Albany ( Boston and Albany Railroad ) and New York - North Bennington (- Montreal ) ( New York and Harlem Railroad ) lines crossed. Today only the long-distance route between Boston and Albany is in operation; the trains pass through the station without stopping. The Interstate 90 ( New York State Truway ) runs about 8 kilometers north.
