The segmental aplasia of the Müllerian duct is an occasionally occurring malformation in which sections of the Müllerian duct - the fetal precursor of the uterus - are not fully developed (→ aplasia ). If the uterine lining has developed, cysts filled with mucus ( mucometra ) can form in the corresponding sections due to the secretion of the glands during the sexual cycle .

Segmental aplasia of Müller's duct in the area of the tip of the left uterine horn with cyst formation (about 4 cm in diameter) in a cat. The fallopian tubes and ovaries can be seen on the right edge of the cyst.

Segmental aplasia of Müller's duct usually does not cause any symptoms; it is usually recorded as an incidental finding during a laparatomy , during sonography of the abdominal cavity or during castration . If the cysts become very enlarged after several sexual cycles - the cysts in dogs can reach a diameter of up to 20 cm - severe general disturbances and abdominal pain can also occur.

Therapy consists in the surgical removal of the aplastic parts of the uterus.
