The Unisphere was built in 1964 for the World's Fair in New York City . It's located in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens . The globe is made of steel , is 42 meters high and weighs 350 tons. The diameter is 37 meters. Three rings surround the Unisphere, which represent the orbits of satellites. It reminds Queens residents that their neighbors are from all over the world. The Unisphere was designed by the American engineer and landscape architect Gilmore David Clarke .

restoration

In 1989, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation decided to invest several million dollars in the restoration of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Part of the project was the restoration of the Unisphere. This started in 1993 and involved removing rust and dirt. In addition, 96 water fountains were installed.

Climbing the Unisphere

The Unisphere was climbed in 1976 by climbers George Willig and Jerry Hewitt as part of the short film The Third Stone (directed by Paul Hornstein). In 2019 it was climbed by Glen Schleyer, a member of Extinction Rebellion . Schleyer wanted to draw attention to the fires in the rainforest in 2019.

The Unisphere appears in numerous films, music videos and television series, including Men in Black ; Law & Order: Criminal Intent ; Black Rain or King of Queens .
