Gilmore David Clarke

Gilmore David Clarke (born July 12, 1892 in New York City , † August 8, 1982 at sea) was an American civil engineer and landscape architect . He designed many public spaces in New York City, including parts of Central Park such as the Conservatory Garden.

Life

Clarke studied landscape architecture and engineering at Cornell University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1913 . During the First World War he served in the US Army as an engineer. After the war he worked for various commissions at regional and federal level. He served on the architectural advisory councils for the Washington Capitol and the New York State Council of Parks . For his work in Westchester County , he was awarded the gold medal of the Architectural League of New York in 1931 . In 1934 he became a specialist advisor to the New York City Park Department under city planner Robert Moses . His work included the design of the Central Park Zoo, the expansion of Riverside Park and other public spaces. At Cornell University he became dean in 1939 . Clarke was landscape architect for the New York World's Fair 1939/40 and was later also involved in the exhibition in 1964/65. He also designed the Unisphere . As a landscape architect as well as an engineer, Clarke was responsible for the Garden State Parkway and other highways. In addition to his practical work, he was also a member of the United States Commission of Fine Arts from 1937 to 1950 . In 1946, Clarke was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design . In 1972 he retired from his company. In 1982 he died on board the ship Royal Viking Star while on a cruise off the coast of Denmark.

In 1937 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
