La Pâtisserie Gloppe is a painting by Jean Béraud from 1889. It shows the interior of the Pâtisserie Gloppe, which was at house number 6 on the Champs-Élysées .

The picture shows the interior of the pâtisserie on the Champs-Élysées as well as the customers and two employees of the establishment. In the foreground on the left is a trimmed oval table at which a little girl and a woman are standing, serving from various plates; A group of three can be seen on the right: two women sit opposite each other at a small round stone table with three cast-iron feet and eat fine pastries, while a waitress stands behind the table and pours wine or another alcoholic drink into a stemmed glass. One of the two customers has her grand poodle with her, who is sitting on the tiled floor next to her. Other people stand freely in the room or at the counter that occupies the middle part of the picture: a man in a cylinder is eating, the stick tucked under his arm, pastries that he is holding on a plate in his left hand and with his right to Munde leads, two women talk to each other, their profile turned towards the viewer, a little to the left of the center of the picture, while they stand at the counter and eat pastries, and another lady, with her back turned to the viewer, is shopping with a boy in a sailor suit this counter. Another clerk works behind the confectionery on the counter. Leaning forward slightly, she seems to be arranging something on a lower table that is hidden from view. These employees and some of the customers are reflected in a large mirror on the back wall of the room, in which the shop windows with the reversed inscription of the shop name and a kind of awning can also be seen. Further, narrower mirrors are located on the sides of the room and create the illusion of a larger room.

The shop is decorated in gray and cream tones with gold trim; There are no carpets on the tiled floor and no blankets on the tables. A gold-colored candlestick with four white candles hangs from the ceiling. The employees are dressed in black and wear long white aprons. The guests also wear muted colors, but their clothes are less unadorned than those of the two employees: The cul de Paris is represented several times, frills and borders can be seen and the poodle apparently wears a shiny collar with gemstones. A red medal can be seen on the cloak of the white-haired customer, the only adult man in the picture. Apart from the food depicted, this forms the only color spot in the painting. The food and drinks in the pâtisserie also often have red or reddish tones and are sometimes reminiscent of glazed fruits. They can be seen on the counter and the various plates. Ice cream specialties may also be shown here.

The painting is now in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris ; it was acquired in 1944 and previously belonged to Armand Dorville. It was depicted in several books that deal with the food culture and the change in eating habits of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century, for example in the illustrated book On the Trail of Great Discoverers. The adventures of mankind , published in 2007 by Helmut Lingen Verlag in Cologne. Here the picture on p. 302 illustrates a section about the increase in sugar consumption in the 19th century. Also Heinz-Gerhard Haupt used the image in his book consumption and trade. Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries . The picture shows a typical scene of the Belle Époque .

In his work Food in Painting , Kenneth Bendiner draws attention to how relaxed the guests are with the goods: You eat with your fingers, and nowhere is a cake fork or similar instrument to be seen. The guests are also apparently free to dine on an outpatient basis, as the elderly gentleman on the left of the picture does. Nevertheless, judging by the whole ambience, the Pâtisserie Gloppe is a meeting place for the wealthy residents of Paris, especially women and children.

In 2007 the painting was shown in the exhibition Femme, femme, femme. Paintings of Women in French Society from Daumier to Picasso from the Museums of France shown at the New Orleans Museum of Art. In 2008/09 the picture was in the exhibition Il Cioccolato. Dai Maya al XX Secolo can be seen in Alba .

Relationship with other pictures of Béraud

Après la faute

Béraud's painting Après la Faute (so called: after the misconduct) probably dates from the same time as La Pâtisserie Gloppe . Although it shows a completely different motif, a girl appears here who apparently wears the same clothes as the customer in the pâtisserie who has her poodle with her. Après la Faute is not dated and not signed.
